Alaskan Malamutes are strong, rugged sled dogs that came originally from Alaska. Eskimos called Malemiuts developed that breed. The Malamute is a large, compactly built dog. Its thick coat usually is wolf-gray or black and white, with darker marking on the head. The Malamute carries its bushy tail over its back. When it steeps, it curls up so that its tail covers its noise. Most Malamutes weigh from 75 to 85 pounds. Renowned for their strength and endurance, Alaskan Malamutes have been used on expeditions to the Artic and Antarctic. One of the oldest sled-dog breeds, they were developed to pull heavy loads and carry backpacks over long distance. Although Malamutes are rugged and need plenty of exercise, generally preferring to live outside, they are also affectionate, playful and devoted family pets. They range from 23'' to 28'' tall and from 75 lbs. to 85 lbs.
