Food

The Bichon is known for being sensitive to many foods and dyes.  Like many dogs, you must be careful about what you give them to eat.  Bichons cannot have nuts, milk, pork, berries, some vegetables, and chocolate. You should try to limit their food scraps from the table to keep them at a healthy weight.  There is a wide variety of dog foods that you can choose from such as Iams, Eukonoba, and much more.  If your dog is sensitive to food dyes, then Kibbles-and-Bits or Science Diet is a good choice because it uses all-natural food dyes.

Grooming

The Bichon Frise is a high maintenance dog for grooming. The Bichon has a double coat which means it has a coat under a coat. The coat must be combed thoroughly before bathing; if a matt gets wet it gets tighter making the knot almost impossible to get out. After you brush them, then you can clean their ears. To clean their ears you pull out small pieces of hair at a time then you can put some rubbing alcohol in their ears. After this you can clip their nails. You only have to clip them on a monthly basis.  Do not clip above the clear part of the nail or it will start to bleed.  This could result in a limp for life. If it does start to bleed then put the nail in powder to stop it.

To bath your Bichon you will need to start by wetting down the head. Be careful not to get water down it's mouth, nose or eyes as shown above.  The coat of a Bichon is very thick so it will take a long time to get wet. Use a shampoo recommended for white dogs and gently squish it into the fur, not scrubbing because this could cause matting. After thoroughly washing the fur then squeeze out the excess water and towel dry him.  Then you should blow-dry his coat and comb him until a fluffy coat is achieved.

Exercise

Another factor to keep your dog healthy is regular exercise. You can do one of the simplest activities which is taking your dog for a walk.  You can also play with your dog by throwing a Frisbee, playing ball or  tug-of-war. You must keep your Bichon under 25 pounds so it is at a safe weight.

The last thing to keep your dog happy is to look after it and love it. This part of your dog's health is very important.  If your dog feels depressed or upset then it may not eat or listen to you. Loving your dog will keep both you and your dog happy.
