Base Running

To base run the correct and safest way you should have the side of your foot on the side of the base that is away from the pitchers mound.  So your left foot is always the one touching the base.  Your right foot should be in foul territory behind and beside the base but not directly behind.

Leading

Leading is a main part of base running. You can not leave the base until the pitcher releases the ball or else you will be called out if the umpire sees you.  Once the pitcher releases the ball you take about 3 long strong strides off the base looking at the catcher the whole time.  If the catcher drops the ball you can advance to the next base, or steal, but if the catcher has a successful catch and throws the ball to the base you are coming from. If you think you are going to get out because you didn't take a big enough lead to steal, you should dive back to the base you are coming from.

Diving

To dive back to a base you should first take a lead.  Then you should take one step back to the base and dive extending your arms reaching for the base.  During the dive you should always have your face away from the direction the ball is being thrown.

Sliding

Sliding is a very important part of base running.  Your should slide when you are stealing or a play is being made at the base you are going to.  You should start to slide about 5 feet before getting to the base.  You should be running full speed before dropping to the ground.  Your legs should make a four shape during the slide and your hands should not drag on the ground during the slide or you might break your wrist.
