The sport of gymnastics was practiced around 2000 years ago by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
In the 1830s it was introduced to the United States by immigrants Charles Beck, Charles Follen, and Francis Lieber.  The first gymnastics club in the USA was 1850.  Gymnastics was included in the first Olympics as one of seven events, but for only men in 1896.  In 1928 women's gymnastics was introduced to the Olympics and quickly developed into the four disciplines, vault, asymmetric bars, beam and floor work. This was to encourage femininity opposed to strength.  On the right you see three pictures.  The first picture is of Friedrich Jahn he is the man who invented the first club for gymnastics in 1811 in Germany.  The second picture at a girls' school gymnasiumun 1900's.

This is a picture of Olga Korbut from the Soviet Union in 1972 Olympic Games she inspired many youngsters to learn gymnastics.
