Shetland Sheepdogs are native to the Shetland Islands off of  the Scottish Coast. The history of this dog began in America in 1911. The Shetland Sheepdog was chosen to control the sheep because he is very attentive and alert. Obedience and alertness are of utmost importance for the safety of the flock of  sheep.
The sheltie is strong, rough-coated, long haired, and between13 and 16in tall at the shoulder. The head is refined and eyes are dark in most dogs. Some, however, have blue eyes.
The most beautiful feature is his coat. The outer coat is long and straight; The mane is abundant and especially impressive in male dogs.
The innocence and sincerity are all present in the Sheltie's eyes. He is the ideal dog because of his outgoing personality, unshakable loyalty  and alertness as a guard dog.  Some Shelties are reserved toward strangers but not to the point of showing fear.  This kind of dog is affectionate and responsive to his owner. Shelties are a source of true joy and pride to their owners.
