There are many steps and rules of basic training.  First, you must understand that you have to be consistent with what is permitted and prohibited.  Second, be authoritative, but don't use physical force.  Make sure you use the right tones at the right time.  Golden's learn mostly from tones.  Third, always teach in an area with as little distraction as possible.  Also, make sure you are in a good mood.
Forth, only teach your Golden Retriever one concept per training session.  Also, remember to make sure that your dog knows the previous skill before you move on.  Fifth, remember to praise your dog after he\she did something correctly.  Sixth, punish disobedience immediately. If you wait to punish, the dog will not remember what he\she did wrong.  Seventh, begin your 10-15 minute sessions the day you bring him\her home.  Hold 2 or 3 sessions a day and try not to bore the dog.

Since Golden Retrievers love to jump, jumping hurdles come as an ease to them.  Sit the dog on one side and go on the other.  Say "jump!" and if the dog walks around say "No!" and put the dog back and start over.  Praise your if he\she does it right.  You can hire the bars on the hurdles slowly over time, but make sure not make them too high.  This can hurt the dog.
Since Golden Retrievers love human companionship, they are eager to learn, which makes them faster learners.  Because Golden's are so eager to learn, you can teach them endless amounts of skills.  After you teach your Golden Retriever these skills, you can then move on to advanced training.
