Biography
2Pac was born Tupac Amaru Shakur on June
16th, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. He died September
13th,1996 in Las Vegas. 2Pac was the son o f
two Black Panther members. His mother was actually carrying him in a New
York State prison. As a teenager, Tupac studied at the Baltimore School of Arts. Then
he moved with his family to Marin City, California where he started to
"Hustle" on the streets. His debut in to the rap world came when
he appeared in the Digital Underground. After Digital Underground came his first
solo project 2Pacalypse Now. The controversy started when he received much criticism
for the Lyrical Content. His first hit was in 1993 with "I Get
Around." 2Pacalypse Now went platinum. Strictly 4 My ...
showed a more mature and smarter 2Pac with words of wisdom.
In 1994 Pac released his 3rd album, Thug Life Volume 1
with Mopreme, Syke, Macadoshis and the Rated R.. Right around this time Shakur's
acting career started up when he was in his first film entitled
"Juice". He then appeared in the film Poetic Justice
with Janet Jackson. Shakur got in some trouble when he was removed from the set of
Allen Hughes'
Menace II Society
when he attacked the director. He received a 15 day jail sentence in
February 1994. He did make it on to the set of the basketball
movie
Above The Rim
. Even though Shakur was now a star, he still maintained some characteristics that he had picked up on the wild streets of Marin City.
He was arrested in 1992 when he was in a fight he was that
resulted in the accidental death of a six-year-old boy. These charges were later
dismissed. He was arrested in October 1993 for the
shooting of two plain clothes policemen but this charge too was later dismissed.
He was also accused of one count of
forceful sodomy of a female fan. During this time he was on bail for an outstanding
battery charge for allegedly hitting a woman who asked for his autograph, and
had also been in handcuffs Los Angeles for carrying a concealed weapon and
assaulting a driver. Further charges followed when a tape of
2Pacalypse Now
was found in the hands of a man abducted for murder. Tupac was found
guilty of the sexual assault in November 1994, but the next day (30
November) was mugged and shot in the lobby of Times Square's Quad Studios.
He lived and Shakur later accused fellow rapper the Notorious B.I.G. and Sean
"Puffy" Combs for the shooting, causing the east/west animosity that would eventually result in the
shootings that took the Notorious B.I.G. and his own life.
After the shooting, Shakur was sentenced to
four and a half years in jail on February 7 1995. Me Against The World
was released while he was in jail but still debuted at number 1 on the charts. Suge Knight, president
of Death Row Records had set up a parole for Shakur, who eventually only did eight months of his sentence. After that Shakur released 1996's
double CD
All Eyez On Me
, which entered the Billboard chart at number 1. The album sold over six million in
its first year and it got outstanding reviews. 2Pac's biggest hit came from this
album. The song calibrated with Dr. Dre and was entitled "California Love".
At about this time Shakur began on
his acting career again. He stared in Bullet and Gridlock'd. He got shot again when he was in Las Vegas on
September 8 after watching a Mike Tyson vs. Bruce Seldon \at the MGM Grand,
and died five days later. There are many theories, one is that B.I.G. planned the
killing after Shakur had bragged about being with his wife (Faith Evans.) The east/west
rivalry continued
after his death, leading to B.I.G.'s shooting six months later. To make
things even stranger, Orlando Anderson, the leading suspect in 2Pac murder, was
killed in May 29,1998.
Since h is departure, 2Pac's legacy has generated several CD's
and hit singles. R U Still Down? (Remember Me) was released on a new
record label (Amaru Records) puts together unreleased material from 1992-1994.
The Rose that Grew from Concrete is a tribute album to 2Pac was also released in 1999. He is still
producing hit albums such as Until the End of time which was released just last
year in 2001.
