While the final assault on Japan awaited reinforcements from Europe, the island-hopping march continued to the island of Iwo Jima. The troops landed on February 19. This small island took the lives of about 6800 American personal. Iwo Jima was secured on March 16. Situated between the Marianas and Tokyo this island played a major part in the air war. Its two air fields provided a landing site for damaged aricraft and enabled fighters to give the bombers cover during the raids on the cities. Iwo Jima was very important to the destruction of Japan.
