As Dawn Broke

On June 6, 1944 the American troops began there invasion of Normandy or operation Overlord. The German resistance was strong and the Allies foothold was not as good as they had hoped. Many troops lost there lives due to the masses of German Troops.

The Advance

The Germans were perched on a wall that was protected by machine guns. The Germans used rail canons to destroy the landing craft. As the beaches exploded around them the allies did not give up. They kept sending troops in and as every wave entered the allies gained more ground. When the first group of allies reached the the wall the Germans realized that they had a problem. The Germans began to send troops on suicide missions. They would run with grenades strapped to them selves at the allies. Many of the suicide attempts failed and the Germans began a retreat. The beach in Normandy took many lives on June 6 and is why the attack is called D-DAY.
