The Pittsburgh Alleghenies played their first National League game in April of 1887. They played at their first field, Recreation Park. In December of 1889, the Alleghenies changed their name to the Pirates after signing second baseman Louis Bierbauer to a contract from the A's. One of the A's described this signing as something a pirate would do, such as stealing. The name has stuck with them for over a century. The Pirates have won 5 World Series since being established in 1887. They have played in five different parks, also. Recreation Field, Exhibition Park, Forbes Field, Three Rivers Stadium, and PNC Park have all been a home to the Pirates. The Pirates have had many great baseball players on their team. Roberto Clemente, Honus Wagner, Willie Stargell, Pie Traynor, and Bill Mazeroski are some of the most famous Pirates in team history.
