The Pittsburgh Penguins came into business on June 5th 1967. Before the Penguins were actually the Pittsburgh Hornets. The team colors for that were the original Blue and White. The Penguins took the Penguins in 1967 after new advancements. The first game ever played in the civic arena was against Montreal in which the Penguins lost 2-1. The first sellout in Penguins history was on February 3rd, 1968. On April 21, 1971, Thayer Potter buys the Penguins and is the main owner. The Penguins later on in their first season go onto the playoffs but don't go all the way. On January 30th, 1980, The Pittsburgh team takes over their traditional black and gold colors, from their old blue and white jerseys. In my mind, the best coach that ever played for the Penguins was hired on June 12th 1990. Later on in this season, the Penguins go on to win the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup. The main player on the Penguins, or the most remembered on would have to be Mario Lemieux. In 1991, the Penguins would go onto another winning season to have another Stanley Cup season. On June 12th, 1992, the Penguins would come out with their present day logo. They would tell the league and fans in a press conference on this day. On May 20th, 1995, the ICEOPLEX in South Pointe would open for the Penguins to practice in. In the season of 2000, the Civic arena would be renamed as Mellon arena, and Mellon bank would become the Penguins main sponsor. The Penguin's head coach is now Rick Kehoe, along with Joe Mullen and Randy Hillier as his assistants. They are now owned and run by Mario Lemieux, and the general managers are Craig Patrick and Ed Johnston. If you would want to know the 2001-2002 roster for the Penguins just go to the player Bios page.
