Ballet started in the early middle ages. It started out as just a play. In the late nineteenth century in Russia, ballet began to change. Some of the first ballets written include The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake.
By the end of the Romantic Period, dancers had developed new skills such as pointe, to make themselves look weightless. Dancers had to become stronger, and more technical. Choreographers then began to design ballets around the dancers' skills.
By the end of the twentieth, ballets became less technical. Now creating a convincing atmosphere, using dance, music and design, was the objective. Today ballets are used in many other types of performances. Ballet also has other dance techniques incorporated in it today.
