Antonio Age 14

 

Antonio Prohias was born in 1921 in Cienfuegos, Cuba. He showed a aptitude for drawing at a very early age. In the fourth grade his teacher insisted that Antonio give a art instructor for the rest of the class, a task he savored. Antonio's father did not like art and discourage Antonio from drawing. At the age of 16 Antonio got a job and bought art supplies with the money he earned.

 

His first debut as a Professional artist in 1938 on the Cuban newspaper Alerta. Soon after he had a steady job on the El Dia daily newspaper. In 1946 at the age of 25 he won the Juan Gualberto Gomex gold medal and a purse of $1,500. He drew a Day in the Life of a Cuban Housewife. After he won the award he received a call from his father telling Antonio to come by his office. Antonio's father ask him to loan him $500. Antonio gladly gave him $800. Antonio died on February 24,1998 at the age of 77.
