The Rules of Basketball
Fouls:
1.Holding.
2.Tripping.
3.Pushing.
4.Charging- when a stationary defensive defensive player is run into by an offensive player.
5.Blocking- getting in the way of an opponent who has the ball by moving into his or her path.
Intentional foul- holding, pushing, or fighting with the intent to hurt someone or stop the play. The other team gets two shots and get the ball out of bounds. Often you are kicked out of the game.
Personal fouls- on your fifth foul you are out of the game.
Technical foul- coach, players in the game, and personnel on the bench that are associated with the team.
Team fouls- the total number of personal fouls for a team, starting with the seventh team foul the other team will be shooting a one on one, after ten fouls the opposing team gets to shoot two foul shots.
Scoring:
1.Free throws- worth 1 point.
2.Field goals- worth 2 points, if it is outside the arc it is worth 3 points.
Time Violations:
1.10 seconds- a. you have ten seconds to shoot a free throw after an official hands you the ball.
b. a team has ten seconds to bring the basketball across half court after in bounding the ball.
2.5 seconds- a. being guarded closely by the defense.
b. a team has 5 seconds to inbounds the ball.
3.3 seconds- offensive player has to move in and out of the key area within 3 seconds.
Common Violations:
1.Stepping- out of bounds with the ball.
2.Walking- taking more than one step with the basketball without shooting, dribbling, or passing.
3.Double dribble- dribbling the ball, stopping, then dribbling again. It is also, dribbling with 2 hands.
4.Kicking- kicking the basketball with the foot or lower leg.
Regulation Court Dimensions:
1.Hoop- ten feet from the floor.
2.Free throw line to basket- fifteen feet.
3.High school court 84' x 50'.
Length of Quarters:
1.Junior high- 4 quarters 6 minutes each.
2.High school- 4 quarters 8 minutes each.
3.Junior varsity- 4 quarters 7 minutes each.
4.NBA- 4 quarters 15 minutes each.
5.College- 2 halves 20 minutes each.
Time outs- each team gets three each game one additional per overtime period.
Overtime period- in high school it's a 4 minute time length (5 minutes in the NBA).
Starting the Game:
1.There is a jump ball in the center circle.
2.An alternating possession is used between the two teams during the game rather than another jump ball for tie ups.
Players:
There are five players on the court for each team at a time.
-Offense is the team that has possession of the basketball.
-Defense is trying to keep the other team from scoring; they are trying to get control so that they can be on offense.
Positions- a. forwards close to the basket and on the wing areas, they are better shooters than the centers and guards.
b. centers are the tallest players and around in the key area, shifting to the side of the ball.
c. guards are often the shortest players who have good ball handling skills.
Offensive Play:
1.Object is to score points, ways to shoot the basketball.
1.Jump shot- release the basketball at the height of jump. Is effective when closely guarded.
2.Lay-up- highest percentage shot because of the closeness to basket. Use the glass and approach diagonally.
3.Set shot- used when shooting long shots and foul shots.
Defensive Play:
1.Zone.
2.Man to Man.
