The floor exercise is an event done by both men and women.  The floor exercise consists of a floor routine done to music.  Each routine must have certain skills in them depending on the level of difficulty.  Each routine has balance moves, turns, jumps, leaps, gymnastics and acrobatic combinations, and tumbling passes.  There are passes that have either front tumbling, back tumbling, or a combination of both.  A floor routine should be graceful and smooth.

Points are deducted in a floor routine for bad form, not staying in beat with the music, or going out of bounds.

The actual floor has springs underneath it to allow the gymnast to bounce higher than normal.  The springy floor is extremely helpful in difficult tumbling passes.
