Temples played a major part in the History of Egypt.
There is only a few existing temples that are now standing that were not rebuilt or moved.  Yes, they did move temples.  One example of a temple they moved, is the temple with the people carved in the side of the wall.  This temple is in the Mummy Returns, when the bracelet shows the boy where to go. The reason that they moved the temple, is because of the Aswan Dam.  Which is shown on the map on the home page.  Archeologists have had a very difficult time with the dam.  They have actually had to disassemble temples and move them to a totally new location.  this is very difficult to do and takes a few years.
History isn't the only thing that Temple's contributed to.

Temples helped a whole lot in the major beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians
For one thing, it taught them about the principal of death.

Death really wasn't a major thing in the early years of Egypt, when  the people were still in tribes, and used stone tools.  But, whenever the Iron Age came to Egypt, death started to become a attempted issue, meaning that is was there, and people did more, but not that much about it.  Death actually became "important" around the 1'st Dynasty. The 1'st dynasty is one of the times most known and honored throughout all of the Ancient Egyptian History.  If you don't know or haven't guessed, this is the "Great Era," whenever the Great Pyramids of Giza were built.
