The first Rx-7 started out on April 24th 1979.  It had a 12A rotary engine under the hood.  The Rx-7 was a four seated car in Japan but when it came to America it was changed to a two seated car.  Mazda only planned to give the U.S. 1,500-2,000 cars.  But it ended up as 3,000.  Soon the demand for Rx-7s skyrocketed, in just 1979 the demand was as high as 54,853 cars.  The Rx-7 started out as a four-speed car but Mazda gave it a 13B engine and it had become a 5-speed car.  In 1986 the Rx-7's body was redone and it became more comfortable and had more size in it.  In 1987 Mazda introduced the Turbo II model and the Rx-7 became the most popular sports car in America.
The Rx-7 was left relatively unchanged until 1993 when it was totally redesigned and built just for speed.  It had enhanced turbocharger efficiency and cooling performance that increase the maximum engine power to 280 psi.  Soon in the mid 1990's the Mazda Rx-7 was discontinued.
