Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. She got the middle name Dana from her grandma. Her nicknames were Liyah, Baby girl, Wonder Woman, Li Li and Lee. At five years old she moved to Detroit from Brooklyn. At age nine Aaliyah auditioned for the TV show Family Matters. When she was 11 she sang "My Funny Valentine" on Star Search. She also performed in Las Vegas with Gladys Knight. Aaliyah was only fifteen when her first album was released. She graduated from Detroit High School of the Performing Arts with a 4.0 GPA. At 21 she was in Joel Silver's feature film, Romeo Must Die. Aaliyah's most favorite foods were Pancakes, Pizza, pastas and veggies. Her favorite dessert vanilla ice-cream with whipped cream, vanilla syrup, nuts and cherries.
