Breaststroke is swum on the stomach. With the hands and arms extended in front of you, a out sweep is done. When the hands are shoulder width apart, they scull down and in, in a circular motion. This is the in sweep. After this, the hands slide forward, getting ready for the next arm stroke. The kick is done by bringing the heals up and then whipping the legs out, down and around. The kick is done when the arm stroke is completed and as the hands begin to slide forward. |

| Freestyle is swum on the swimmers' stomach. The head is face down in the water and is turned to one or both sides to breathe. A flutter kick is used during freestyle. The arms are used alternately, you reach out about 3/4 of your natural reach after a slight out sweep with the hand. The hand sweeps down with the elbow held high. The hand moves toward the swimmers' midline and then the hip, where it exits the water and a new stroke begins. |
