Do you know where the word tennis originated? It came from the French word tenez, which means look out. A player would shout this when he or she served. Here is some information on how tennis progressed through the ages, so read on. Tennis has been around for a long time, an ancient form of tennis was even played by the Greeks around 500 B.C. In the 15th century a game called royal tennis was invented in France. Lawn tennis or the tennis game that is played today was invented during Queen Victoria's reign. Tennis became a serious sport in the late 1800's. The first tennis championship was held at the All-England Tennis Club, this tournament was called Wimbledon. (Go to Grand Slams for more information on Wimbledon.) Tennis then progressed from there to the point where it is now.
