* Once again, the Bethel Park Federation of Teacher's Union is offering three $1000 (one time only) scholarships which includes the Linda Jones Scholarship. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. If you are a graduating senior, who will be majoring in education and are planning a rewarding career in the field of education, YOU should apply. All applications are due back in the records office by May 28, 2008.
* MRSA Case Confirmed- We have been notified that a Bethel Park High School student has a confirmed case of MRSA. Please click here to read a letter from Dr. Jansante that was distributed to all Bethel Park High School students on Thursday, May 1.
* Attention Seniors: As the school year begins to wind down, we would like to share some important information with you and your parents/guardians. Please read this letter from Dr. Jansante, review the calendar of important dates and return this form to the records office concerning any awards/scholarships you have received as well as your future plans.
* Poetry Cafe Is a Success! This year's Poetry Cafe in the Media Center featured performances by more than 30 students who spent a week honing their writing with local artist Brad Yoder, who worked with the students in small groups throughout the week to prepare them for the Poetry Cafe. BPHS students visited the Cafe during their English classes and not only had an opportunity to hear some original poetry and songs, but they also had a chance to get up and perform as well. * Important information concerning Final Exam Week: The 2008 Final Exam Schedule is now available for your review. Please be advised of these guidelines for Final Exam Week:
  • Students will not be permitted to leave the property during the testing schedule.
  • All seniors involved in the early release program should make arrangements to be in school during their assigned testing periods.
  • Students will be permitted to follow their early release program provided they do not miss regular classes and will be present for exams.
  • If a student has an AM early release program, they will be permitted to arrive when their regular assigned class is in session.
  • All underclassmen will remain on campus for the entire day.
  • Early releases during the three days of testing will not be honored unless a principal's signature is attached. Students should not schedule appointments during the days of testing.
* Congratulations to sophomores Marcus Dominick and Andy Pfeifer, who were the top scorers in the region on National French Exams. Marcus was #1 in the region on the Level IV Exam and #3 nationally. Andy was #1 in the region on the Level III Exam and in the 95th percentile nationally.
* Congratulations to senior Sarah Dillon, who was named the April BPHS Student of the Month by the Bethel Park Rotary Club.
* National Honor Society Inducts 107! The Bethel Park High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 107 new members on April 17. To be eligible for induction, students must maintain a 3.85 QPA, participate in a minimum of 35 hours of community service annually and demonstrate outstanding character and leadership. * Apprenticeships have arrived! The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is sponsoring a number of half-day or day-long apprenticeship experiences over a six month period during the 2008-2009 school year. Applications are currently being accepted in 35 different areas. For more information, please click here and see Mrs. Romito in the Counseling Office.
* Three Win at Science Olympiad! Congratulations to Andy Pfeifer, who earned a Second Place in the Astronomy Event at the Science Olympiad, held at California University of Pennsylvania. Ian Harrold and Zach Smith teamed up to earn Fourth Place medals in the Physics Lab and Food Science Events.
* Congratulations to seniors Amy Blanc and Christina DeSantis, who earned First Place Gold Medals in the Entrepreneurship Event at the FCCLA State Conference! Besides the Gold Medals, the students were presented with scholarships to Johnson and Wales University.
* Congratulations to Andy Pfeifer and Manasa Ravi, who were selected as winners at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Heinz Field. Andy won an award from the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association for his project, "XOR—Secured Password Truncation." Manassa won an award from the Society of Corrosion Engineers for her project, "Corrosion and Drain Cleaners."
* Congratulations to BPHS freshmen and sophomore members of the Forensics Team who did well at the Frosh/Soph Speech and Debate Invitational at Keystone Oaks. David Dickey won First Place in the Original Oratory Contest. Nathan Muscato captured Third Place in the Lincoln Douglas Debate. Kaitlynn Conley placed Fifth in the Interpretation of Poetry event. They competed against students from 23 area schools.
* Four to Participate in PMEA State Concerts: Congratulations to Dan Salera and Steve Miller, who will play in the State Orchestra Concert. Julie Hollis will play in the State Band and Maggie Barr will sing in the State Chorus. All three groups will perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators State Conference to be held in April in Hershey.
* Congratulations to BPHS English Teacher Charles Herd, who has been named a Teacher of Honor by the Teacher Excellence Center, along with Neil Armstrong Science Teacher Mary Huwe and Independence Middle School Language Arts Teacher Nadine Peters. Mr. Herd will be honored at the 2008 Celebration of Teaching, which will be held on April 24 at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. He is now eligible to be named one of seven Teachers of Excellence. Good luck, Mr. Herd!
* Congratulations to Bethel Park High School English Teacher Charles Youngs, who has been named one of 12 Finalists in the 2009 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Program.  The 2009 PA Teacher of the Year will be announced in October.  Good luck, Mr. Youngs!
* Congratulations to seniors Adam Schmidt and Matt Shaffer, who will receive the SHASDA (South Hills Area School Districts Association) Award in April at Southpointe!
* SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR GRADES 9-12: Due to the escalating number of cell phone infractions this year, we are increasing the consequence for future infractions. In addition to the discipline described in the Code of Conduct Handbook, an additional three (3) detentions will be added to each infraction. Please do your best to make sure cell phones are turned off and put away during the day.
* Join the Bethel Park Video Club Bethel Park Public Access TV is looking for interested BPHS students to join the Bethel Park Video Club. The Video Club is a great way to gain experience with some of the latest professional TV equipment or get experience as an on-air personality. The Video Club meets every Thursday after school at the BPTV Studio in the Municipal Building (5100 West Library Avenue). Please click here to find out more about the BP Video Club!
* Edline Now Available for Bethel Park High School Parents! Parents whose children attend Bethel Park High School now have electronic access to their child's academic progress through Edline. In September all parents received an Edline Activation Code via U.S. Mail. Parents are encouraged to go to www.edline.net and activate their child's account. The website will guide you through the process. Once an account is activated, parents can see their child's interim grades posted for the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th weeks each quarter for assignments, tests and quizzes, as well as attendance and final report card grades. Parents who have difficulty accessing Edline can contact Donna Murphy (412-854-8581), Wanda Gratton (412-854-8591), Judy Daley (412-854-8584) or Lynne Pieczynski (412-854-8571). We encourage all parents to stay up to date with their child's progress via Edline. Parents who do not have access to the Internet can do so at the Bethel Park Library. Librarians are available to assist.
* Cafeteria earns 7 Black Diamonds from Health Department The BPHS Cafeteria earned 7 Black Diamonds from the Allegheny County Health Department as a result of its most recent inspection. Black Diamonds are awarded for exceptional conditions of sanitation, temperature and having a certified manager on staff. Congratulations to the BPHS Cafeteria Employees for a great job!
