There are two different types of Varsity matches: Exhibition and Section.
At an Exhibition match, the top eight scores are determined at the end of the match and added up to form a team score out of 800-80x (the maximum possible score).
Before a Varsity match begins, however, ten people are chosen to shoot for score. The ten people chosen are the best shooters during practice. After the match, the eight best targets out of the ten are counted and added up to get a score. The other team members shoot on the side as Junior Varsity. Usually fifteen to twenty-five team members are chosen to shoot at each match.
The number of students chosen to shoot depends on the number of lanes in the range. At Bethel Park, we have ten lanes in our range. Each team gets half of the range, so Bethel gets five and the other team gets five. Since there are five relays at every match, during home matches, we can have twenty-five people shoot.
Relays are fifteen minutes long, and there is a five minute break between relays for the shooter to remove his or her equipment from the mat and for the next shooter to prepare to shoot (get in to position and relax). After all relays are finished, targets are scored by the coaches and recoreded by the captains of both teams.
There must be five relays at a Varsity match because there has to be two of the ten people chosen to shoot as Varsity on each relay.
