Rifles

RiflesThe rifles we use are Anschutz .22 caliber target rifles model 1907 and 1912. We use Lapua ammunition.

Clothing

Since we shoot from a prone position, we wear an arm pad, jacket, sling, and glove.

CoatsBefore the jacket can be put on, the shooter wears a tight fitting sweater/sweatshirt and an arm pad. The tightness of the sweater is for consistency; a loose sweater can bunch or shift and cause a bad position. Arm pads are worn so that the slings stay high on the shooters arm while he or she is shooting. The jackets are made of leather and are very stiff. In a good fitting jacket, the wearer should not be able to bring his or her elbows together in front of the body. The jacket must be stiff and tight to keep the arm that is holding the rifle in place. This is most important for people who are flexible or double-jointed; it is possible to shoot without a jacket if you are not.

Gloves and slingsThe next item to be put on is a sling. The sling is worn around the upper arm, just beneath the armpit, with the adjustable strap facing away from the body. The top is hooked onto the fore end stop, and the arm is looped around the sling. Between the hand and the fore end stop, the shooter wears a glove so that the rifle is not resting on the bare hand.
