IMS Home Again Project 2010

The students and staff of Independence Middle School in the Bethel Park School District are engaged in the second year of the service learning project called “Home Again.”  Participants in the project have repaired and refurbished the home of a family in the community during a weekend in May.  The focus of the work was to address safety and energy efficiency as well as comfort and aesthetics.

Below you will find information about the various suppliers and contractors who helped with this project along with pictures and video from the project and various fund raising events.   Click here to see the 2009 Project.

IMS Home Again Fund Raisers

Elementary Volleyball Challenge

The staffs from Lincoln, Franklin, Memorial and Washington organized an Elementary Volleyball Challenge to raise money for the ―Home Again Project at IMS. Teams played against one another on March 27 at IMS, with Memorial winning the tournament.  Refreshments, raffles and a bake sale also helped to raise funds for this student service learning opportunity at IMS that will have students and staff working together to refurbish the home of a needy Bethel Park family in May.

William Penn Secret Santa

We'd like to thank the staff of William Penn Elementary school for donating their Secret Santa money to our project.  -Thank YOU!!!!!!

Team 8B Walk-a-thon

On April 1st, team 8B took to the high school track donned in orange Home Again t-shirts to raise money for the 2010 Home Again project.  During March, students worked to get family, friends and neighbors to pledge money for each lap or mile completed by the student.  The students spent four team periods walking on the track, completing between 20 and 32 laps, or between 5 and 8 miles.  Individual students raised between $10 and $250 for their efforts.  Overall, the team of 108 students raised over $2,500.  In addition to the walk-a-thon, team 8B conducted a t-shirt sale.  8B students purchased these shirts to wear during the walk-a-thon, and the shirts were also sold to the rest of the student body and to the faculty.  Students and staff will be encouraged to wear their shirts to school on Friday, May 14th, the day the Home Again project will begin.  Team 8B raised a few hundred dollars from the t-shirt sales and hopes that the t-shirts will help to promote the Home Again project within the school and the Bethel Park community.

Team 8C Bowl-a-thon

Nothing is capable of positively influencing the minds of our youth to a greater extent than the information and experiences acquired through performing benevolent, selfless acts of community service.  These acts are precisely what the students of Team 8C and 7B at Independence Middle School did by taking part in a  "bowl-a-thon" in order to facilitate the Home Again service learning project during the school year.  This project involved students raising funds which ultimately culminated in a day of bowling.  Those who wished to contribute to the Home Again project through the bowling fund raiser either donated a flat sum of money or pledged a specified amount according to the number of pins knocked down.  As an additional incentive to encourage fund raising efforts, teachers from both 8C and 7B agreed to grow mustaches or arrange their facial hair accordingly to resemble mustaches that corresponded with the amount of money earned. As a result, this fund raiser provided students with fun and enjoyment while simultaneously allowing students to bestow a lasting impression on the lives of a family in need.  Through the dedication, diligence, and collaboration of all those committed to the Home Again project, the  bowl-a-thon secured more than $10,000 for Home Again 2010.
