BETHEL PARK SCHOOLS RECEIVE HIGHMARK HEALTHY 5 SCHOOL CHALLENGE GRANTS

Bethel Park is the only Allegheny County school district where all of its schools successfully applied for and received grants from Highmark through its Healthy High 5 School Challenge Grant Program.

All five elementary schools will evenly split $50,000 for the purchase of Fitness Cluster Gymnasiums for all five schools.  These outdoor fitness clusters will provide students with the opportunity to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activities pertaining to cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition.   The Fitness Center has seven predetermined fitness stations that will allow students the opportunity to prepare for the Presidential Fitness Test.

Neil Armstrong Middle School also received funding to purchase a Fitness Cluster Gymnasium.

Independence Middle School will use its Highmark Healthy 5 School Challenge Grant to purchase additional equipment for the Physical Education Department, including a DDR Mega Group Fitness Bundle, a concrete climbing wall and some in-line skates.  With this equipment, IMS plans to start an X-Games Club, which would be a once a week after school activity, to encourage students to develop a passion  for life-long physical education activities.

Bethel Park High School will use its $10,000 to purchase equipment to support eco-fitness activities, such as biking and in-line skating.

Highmark Healthy High 5 is an initiative of the Highmark Foundation, and is a five-year, $100 million children's health promotion initiative. Its mission is to improve the health of children and adolescents ages 6-18 by providing them with the tools and practices needed to make informed decisions about living healthier lives.
