Bethel Park School District Health Services

OVERVIEW

The National Association of School Nurses defines School Nursing as a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement of students.  School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self management, self advocacy and learning.

School nurses support student success in the following ways:

  • Ensure that all students are properly immunized
  • Provide health screenings
  • Assess and treat acute illnesses and injuries
  • Provide emergency care
  • Manage chronic health conditions in the school setting
  • Administer medications and carry out medical procedures
  • Help students develop positive life-style choices
  • Assist faculty and staff to make health-related adaptations to the school program
  • Assist families to gain access to community health care programs
  • Promote a safe school environment
  • Serve as a resource to faculty, administration and students
  • Promote health-related educational programs for students, staff and families
At its September 25, 2008 meeting, the Bethel Park Board of School Directors approved a revised Medications Policy--210.

Parents, if you have already completed the blue Authorization to Administer Medication (PHYSICIAN’S ORDERS) and have submitted the form to your child's school health office, you do not need to do anything further at this time.

If you have not submitted the form yet, and your child does not require any prescription medications, we will only need a parent or guardian signature in order to permit the school health office to treat your child with over-the-counter medications listed on the blue form.

Please sign the blue authorization form and return it to the school health office as soon as possible. We are not able to treat your child unless this form is signed by a parent/guardian and returned.

If your copy of the Authorization to Administer Medication (PHYSICIAN’S ORDERS) form has been misplaced, you can print another copy from the BPSD website here.
