Junior Checklist

September/October

  • Register for the October PSAT/NMSQT in the School Counseling Office.  The PSAT is the Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  Only juniors taking the PSAT qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition.  The PSAT is only offered once a year.
  • Take the Saturday, October PSAT/NMSQT.
  • Plan to attend any regional College Fair as soon as possible.

 

December

  • Register for January SAT Reasoning Test – Register on line at http://www.collegeboard.com
  • Register for the February ACT – Register online at http://www.act.org

 

January/February

  • Research post-secondary institutions using Naviance.
  • Using Naviance, develop your list of possible colleges.
  • Talk to your School Counselor.
  • Study!  Grades count!  Your cumulative QPA at the end of 11thgrade will be used for most college applications.
  • Set your goals!
  • Take the January SAT Reasoning Test, if registered.
  • Take the February ACT test, if registered.
  • Register for the March SAT Reasoning Test. (This date is the one we recommend you take.)
  • Register for the April ACT. (This date is the one we recommend you take.)

 

March/April

  • Take the March SAT Reasoning Test.
  • Take the April ACT.
  • Register for the May SAT Reasoning Test at http://www.collegeboard.com
  • Register for the June SAT Reasoning Test at http://www.collegeboard.com
  • Register for the May or June SAT Subject Tests, if completing a terminal course i.e. Biology, American History and/or Chemistry at http://www.collegeboard.com
  • Plan your senior year course selection with your Guidance Counselor ASAP!
  • Take the March SAT Reasoning Test, if registered.
  • Take the April ACT, if registered.
  • Register for AP (Advanced Placement) Exams in the Guidance Office.

 

April/May

  • Register for the June ACT at http://www.act.org
  • Plan your summer college visits. 
  • Use Naviance to check admission requirements against your own course selections.
  • Take the May SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Tests, if registered.
  • Take the AP Exams, if registered.

 

June/July/August

  • Take the June SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Tests, if registered. 
  • Take the June ACT, if registered.  
  • Always use Naviance to research colleges online.  Download or request applications.  
  • Schedule appointments for college interviews.  
  • Visit colleges during summer vacation.  
  • Write a rough draft of a personal essay for college applications.
